Songs Both Old and New

Singers

"And Jesus said to them, "Therefore every scribe who has become a disciple of the kingdom of heaven is like a head of a household, who brings out of his treasure things new and old" (Matthew 13: 52).

There seems to be somewhat of a generation gap in many churches when it comes to singing songs in worship. Older people identify with the traditional songs, singing with fondness (and even nostalgia) "Precious Memories," "The Old Rugged Cross," and the curious "Church in the Wild Wood." Younger people are inspired by the relevant messages of contemporary praise songs, singing with emotion "The Greatest Command," and "There's a Stirring."

A Sign of a Successful Church

Jonathan Jones II

God placed leaders in the church for the purpose of preparing and equipping disciples of Jesus to be engaged in the work of the ministry (Ephesians 4:11-12). God does not intend for leaders in his church to be involved in everything that the local church does. Too many preachers, elders and deacons (and their wives) become burned out in doing the work of the kingdom because they try to be involved in everything. God's design is for leaders in the church to oversee, supervise, delegate, and equip disciples in the congregation to be involved in works of ministry that are specifically matched to their individual talents and abilities.

Sunday and Wednesday Classes

Exodus
Danny Morris
Room 202

The book of Exodus continued:  The going out or the departure from Egypt is the most remarkable event in this book that follows the death of Joseph and covers the history of 145 years down to the erection of the Tabernacle in the wilderness.  The book examines the causes and motives of the persecution against the Israelites in Egypt, reports on different encampments in the wilderness and miracles wrought in their behalf over 40 years and some detail of the different laws, statutes and ordinances which Moses received from God.

Acts
Jonathan Jones II
Fellowship Hall

The book of Acts continued:  As we move into the continuation of Luke’s account of the gospel, the book of the Acts of the Apostles, the birthday of the church for Jewish believers on Pentecost is followed by the birthday for Gentile believers at Cornelius’s home.  Then there was the day that Christ was introduced to Europe by Paul; which led eventually to the U. S. A. and Maryville—“Go into all the world”

God’s Design for “The Church”
Elders
Room 204

This is an opportunity to meet and discuss the church with the elders of the Maryville Church of Christ.  Each elder will lead one or more of the lessons about the Kingdom of God; new people in Christ; living in Christ; the Body of Christ; the elect of God; the family of God; God’s temple; Christ’s flock; Christ’s bride; and God’s priesthood.
