How Can I Know I’m Saved?

This is an excerpt from Norman Bales’ book How Do I Know I’m Saved?, pp. 162-163.

How can we know that we have received the seal [of the Spirit] confirming our identity as citizens of the kingdom? Some people may base their claim for citizenship on what they feel. Emotions sway our beliefs so powerfully that one often senses he is denying reality when he elects to believe anything that conflicts with how he feels. Nevertheless, feelings can distort reality and produce erroneous conclusions. In the Old Testament story of Joseph, the older sons of Jacob fabricated a lie to cover up their misconduct. They told their father that a wild animal had killed his favorite son. Jacob believed the contrived tale and suffered all the grief emotions that any father would suffer over the loss of a son. However, subsequent history proved that Jacob’s feelings were mistaken. When one assumes that he has received God’s grace on the basis of what he feels, he is using a flawed measuring device to gauge his status.
