Fall 2010 Adult Education Classes
August – October

Sunday and Wednesday Classes

There are 14 weeks in this quarter.  The elders plan to use one week for a special program.

Romans (part 2)
Jonathan Jones II
Fellowship Hall

Do you feel the joy of your salvation?  Restore the excitement of your relationship with God by digging into a study of grace!  The adult class in the fellowship hall will continue a study of Paul's letter to the Romans (chapters 8-16).  In order to be saved, we must experience the “double cure” of salvation.  We not only need the forgiveness provided by the blood of Jesus, we need the transformative power of the indwelling of God’s Holy Spirit.  Come be a part of this engaging study and experience God’s intimacy, his Sovereignty, and his power to transform us to a new way of life.

Love and Respect
Dr. David Snow & Staff
Room 204

Maybe you have heard that a woman needs to be loved by her husband and a man needs to be respected by his wife.  However, if you are like the average man or woman, you are thinking, “Sure, that all sounds great, but what does it mean?”  Once you and your spouse understand what it means to love and respect, relational landmines can be avoided.  The result can be greater love, deeper intimacy and movement toward the kind of marriage that God desires for you.  For greater insight into Ephesians 5:33 you are invited to view the Love and Respect DVDs and then share in the class discussion with a discussion leader.

A Glimpse into God’s Heart
Herbert Byrd III
Room 202

Based on the book A Glimpse into God’s Heart, Learning Forgiveness from the Father, written by Kirk Brothers, this class seeks to deepen our understanding of God’s forgiveness.  We will study why we need forgiveness, what God has done to make forgiveness possible, how we can accept forgiveness, and how forgiveness can be seen in the life of the Christian.  A richer understanding of God’s forgiveness helps us experience the peace that passes understanding, gives us confidence to overcome fear and doubt, and provides the basis for confident Christian living.

Meeting God... Young adults come join us this fall as we reintroduce ourselves to God.  As Christians we often forget why we fell in love with God.  Let’s journey together as we meet God again in all his greatness and majesty.  If you find your interest waning, come join us as we re-ignite our passion and love for the God we long to serve and trust in.

Summer Quarter Classes for Adults
May 2 — July 28

Sunday and Wednesday Classes

Romans
Jonathan Jones II
Fellowship Hall

Do you feel the joy of your salvation?  Restore the excitement of your relationship with God by digging into a study of grace!  The adult class in the fellowship hall will begin a study of Paul's letter to the Romans.  In the most theologically deep book of the New Testament, Paul probes the mechanics of salvation under the new covenant of Jesus Christ, demonstrating the inefficiency of a system of salvation by works contrasted with the effectiveness of salvation by grace.  During the summer quarter we will explore the first 8 chapters of Romans and gain a deeper appreciation of the theology behind our salvation by grace through faith.

Bible Geography
Randy Winstead
Room 204

A continuation of an earlier study, this class will look at the geography of the small kingdoms immediately surrounding or overlapping Israel, at the geography of the Tigris-Euphrates River valley, Persia, Asia Minor, and, if time permits, Greece and Rome.   The study will look at the relationship between these areas and the Biblical text.  In addition to geography, some information on archaeology, culture, and history will also be included.

Boot Camp
Bill Walt & others
Room 202

In this study, we will examine what the Bible has to say about equipping soldiers of the cross for spiritual warfare.  Every soldier must pass through “boot camp” to receive proper training, and the Christian experience is no different.  We will examine our calling, touch on some experiences of soldiers of old and glean some lessons from them.  We will look at some things we must rid ourselves of to prepare for the battle, things like misguided affections, sexual immorality, idolatry, jealousy, anger and sins of the tongue.  We will then turn our attention to each piece of spiritual armor that the soldier of the cross must have and use to defeat our enemy.

Young Adults
Bert Paddock
Room 206

This quarter will be a continuation of the study of Celebrating Spiritual Disciplines:  In today’s environment discipline is not a word we like to think about let alone celebrate.  Come join us as we look into some of the biggest blessings in the kingdom awaiting those that choose to embrace the discipleship that awaits us all as children of a loving and wonderful father.  Discipline is not always a bad thing.  Revelation 3:19

Spring Quarter Classes for Adults
February 7th - April 28th

Sunday and Wednesday Classes

Exodus
Danny Morris
Room 202

The book of Exodus continued:  The going out or the departure from Egypt is the most remarkable event in this book that follows the death of Joseph and covers the history of 145 years down to the erection of the Tabernacle in the wilderness.  The book examines the causes and motives of the persecution against the Israelites in Egypt, reports on different encampments in the wilderness and miracles wrought in their behalf over 40 years and some detail of the different laws, statutes and ordinances which Moses received from God.

Acts
Jonathan Jones II
Fellowship Hall

The book of Acts continued:  As we move into the continuation of Luke’s account of the gospel, the book of the Acts of the Apostles, the birthday of the church for Jewish believers on Pentecost is followed by the birthday for Gentile believers at Cornelius’s home.  Then there was the day that Christ was introduced to Europe by Paul; which led eventually to the U. S. A. and Maryville—“Go into all the world”

God’s Design for “The Church”
Elders
Room 204

This is an opportunity to meet and discuss the church with the elders of the Maryville Church of Christ.  Each elder will lead one or more of the lessons about the Kingdom of God; new people in Christ; living in Christ; the Body of Christ; the elect of God; the family of God; God’s temple; Christ’s flock; Christ’s bride; and God’s priesthood.
